The word cape is derived from the Latin word cappa which means a hooded cloak or long garment. The cape is also related to the chaperon which is a complex piece of medieval headgear that started as a cape and evolved into something else. A cape is a sleeveless outer garment designed to fasten at the throat and fall down the back of the wearer.
